Poetry
from A PLACE OF TENTS
A Manchester Sequence
1. Migrant
he wakes to darkness
turmoil
slips out
with the breaking storm
lightning strobes nervous streets
disquiets, goes to ground
from THE JOURNEY
1. Child
the child dug holes, as if she believed
earth should be cratered
or reprising long distant ancestors
how they might have lived
DEEP RIVER
Deep river, my home is over Jordan.
Deep river Lord, I want to cross over…
No song more apt or less seeming:
your motif concealing as it reveals.
Tenor, baritone, bass, chanting it
over and over, irrepressible, comic.

“The only poet I know who has passed through Inferno and reached a tranquil world born of years of agony. Every word he writes, and not one out of place, is charged with the pain or joy of vivid memories and raw experience. Read more”

“Sean Body, editor of Tarantula Publications and also editor of the magazine Brando’s Hat, has written a wide ranging and sensitively tackled book, covering such topics as Auschwitz and Irish history. It is no surprise to learn he has won a short story competition. Read more“

“This is the latest collection from one of the most memorable of that wordy and worthy crew, The Manchester Poets. Seán Body has the gift of tackling the most delicate subjects with great insight, imagination and sensitivity. The book is divided into sections, the first of which, ‘Witness’, deals with international news events. Read more“

SEASONS
“Losing the ability to express yourself must be a poet’s greatest fear, so it’s unsurprising to find a series of poems which takes this as its prime subject matter. In Sean Body’s most recent work, Seasons, language defines identity and its loss makes the strong and self-assured feel insecure and adrift. Read more“

WITNESS – IAN PARKS ESSAY
“I’d like to begin with the notion of reticence as it seems to me that it is in many ways central to any discussion of Seán Body’s work. From the outset, however, the question of reticence raises an intriguing paradox as it’s always easier to talk about something that’s been said than to talk about something that hasn’t. Read more“
